I believe that the public deserves to know more severe information about what the government is doing. I find that people tend to get more paranoid if they have weird suspicions about shady events the government is going about. Although I do believe that most people are extremely nosy so that is their reason for leaking information or spreading rumors. If the government is going to get hurt by these rumors, than they might as well be open with the public and save all the trouble. If there is speculation of another World War or something to risk the lives of innocent people, then people must know, it should never be hidden. I believe that we could have a very effective democracy without transparency because, there would be much more trust between the government and the citizens.
Personally I would meet with the government and try to come up with a deal of how much of the topic I could announce. I would do this because I know that there would be tons of people who would be worried sick if they had heard speculations of another World War or deadly plague, for example. I realize that the government wouldn't want me to reveal anything about the leaked information, but the public can't be left completely in the dark on the subject. I would have to give them enough information for them to understand the scenario, but not enough for them to be stressed or paranoid about the situation. Although it would be tough to do, I would publish the information because I believe the people should be informed on critical events.
Who Leaked NSA Documents to WikiLeaks?
This article speculates on the matter of how did WikiLeaks obtain NSA documents previously obtained by Edward Snowden. The information Edward had found was that "NSA secretly tapped into the entire telecommunications systems of four countries - the Bahamas, Mexico, the Philippines and Kenya." The speculation arises when WikiLeaks found that the Intercept left out a fifth country involved in the research by NSA, which they threatened to reveal. I don't believe that revealing this fifth country would cause much harm, but NSA believes that it will cause an increase in violence. Since it is NSA's job to research countries I doubt that they were doing little wrong, nor cause much violence.

Caught In Lies
I have always considered that most news related to outrageous events to be fake. Honestly though, I would be surprised if a journalist had the nerve to lie about an article such as something like a fatal car accident, or a mass murder. Then again most journalists wouldn't be hired if their employer had heard word of them lying in articles, so that kind of keeps it balanced. Although that doesn't mean every article is the truth, most is, but others may be written by bias, corrupt or untruthful reporters.
I am completely shocked with the article "Jimmys World". I find this article horrible and rude, for someone to stoop this low in their career deserves to lose her job. She created a fake story just to gain attention and kept it going until it got out of control which makes her look even worse. If she had of just took the time, and did the work none of this would of ever happened. It shocks me the most because their are some kids in the world that are actually suffering that don't get the help they need. The second article "The Wafer Story" was actually pretty amusing to me. I found that it was kind of one of those stories where he doesn't mean to hurt anyone in the process but the writer wants to get a few laughs. The fact that he wrote about the Prime Minister stealing communion bread was a bad direction, because he draws major attention to Canada and also Canadian Christians. Many people take a lot of offense when it comes to religion and he probably should have thought it over before actually posting it.
Yes, I completely agree with Shafer's statement. I could sit down and write a completely fake article on anything within twenty minutes, and I am by no means a great journalist. Liars really don't have a talent in making up stories, because once everyone finds out it is a lie they lose all respect for the journalist. I believe that colleges and universities don't really have to do a better job, because I am sure the content they teach is spot on, but I believe that they should definitely keep a closer eye on student papers/essays to see if they can catch any liars. If the liars are found, they should be penalized some way in the course, which may teach them to work a little more harder in the course and open their eyes to the fact that they plan on their career revolving around journalism.
I think that the ombudsman certainly helps when it comes to journalism because they would be someone you could go to about any complaints with articles, and they wouldn't be as biased as the author of the article. Sometimes it is better to get someone who sees objectively to help in a situation before you charge head on into something that may backfire. Also they could help in calling out the author on their lies, bad reporting or offensive content, which would drastically improve a lot of peoples thoughts on these certain types of articles.

This article would be an example of hard news because storm warnings are very concerning to people everywhere. This article states that up to 30cm of snow could hit New Brunswick this Sunday. This is a very serious matter because many people aren't prepared for the snow to start falling just yet. Many people take snow storms very seriously because they will have to prepare their snow-plows, snowblowers, business hours and etc. Snow can really throw a wrench into a lot of different aspects so hopefully it can hold off for a few more weeks because we don't need that much snow during the first of November.
Antares rocket explosion: Orbital Sciences Corp. looks for cause of blast
This article is an example of hard news because due to this explosion many innocent people could have been harmed, luckily nobody was. After the explosion of the Antares rocket, workers had to search all the scorched remains to find out if there were any traces of how it may of happened, or workers who couldn't escape in time. This would cause a huge financial drop in the companies budget due to the cost of all the repairs needed.

Liverpool, Chelsea dig deep, advance in League Cup
This article would be an example of soft news because it is only covering a sporting event. It recaps the matches during the League Cup which consisted of matches between Liverpool vs Swansea City and others like Derby vs Sheffield United. This news is more entertaining than serious, which doesn't draw much attention to non-soccer fans. Although this news is interesting for people who watch the EPL, but for those who don't it is just another article.
Black Panther, Captain Marvel revealed on massive Marvel slate
This article is a great example of soft news because it calls out to all Marvel fans because they have added another new movie to their long list of upcoming films, once again. This news article explains the announcement of the new Black Panther and Captain Marvel movies which will be released in the coming years. This news is not as serious as an explosion or a bank robbery, but it definitely will get Marvel and superhero fans pumped through the roof for the upcoming films.

Bats nearly wiped out by white-nose syndrome in Eastern Canada
This article would be an example of borderline news because it doesn't have a huge prominence or human interest but it can be very serious to the way we live today. Like any other animal that gets endangered, it causes worry for scientist and it should cause interest in everyone, but people won't start to care until it's to late because that's just the way the world works in this generation. No matter how much people would advertise the seriousness in the matter with the bats population dropping due to the syndrome, people won;t care because it doesn't effect them. Although this could be a very serious matter, the fact of human interest and prominence is very low. Pray for the bats.

Ebola Strikes Again!
On Friday, October 3, thousands of people fled Cordale, Vertshade around noon due to an outbreak in Ebola. Traffic came to a complete stop in Cordale today as thousands of terrified people rushed onto the streets trying to evacuate the soon to be quarantined city.
The madness began around 9 am on October 3, when Cordale Police found a family of 4, deceased in their home, due to respect their names will not be announced. We spoke to the first hand witness Mr. Robinson, the next door neighbor, of the affected family. Mr. Robinson had this to say; "Well after breakfast on Friday's I'd always carpool with my neighbor, so when I arrived to see them all deceased, it scarred me for life. My first reaction was to call the police."
A squad of Cordale Police and a ambulance arrived at the scene as fast as they could. Estimated time of their arrival was about 7 minutes after receiving the call. The two policeman on the scene where Officer Royce and Officer Henderson. Officer Henderson was hard at work trying to piece together the crime, so we were able to speak with Officer Royce, this is what he had to say; "We arrived at the scene around 9:15 am, and began the search of the perimeter. We found the family members within the house in their own beds. The autopsies came back and what it appears is that the family have been tied into a small outbreak of Ebola starting right here in Cordale."
Within a few hours the news had spread like wildfire throughout Cordale, and that was when people started to hit the streets in terror. Due to all the recent news concerning Ebola, this reaction was no surprise to the Police officials. Around 8 pm that night, people had finally settled down, or fled the area. The outbreak wasn't huge but give some time, and you never know what kind of damage a disease could do.

Start with the Basics
New 'Bash' computer bug may be worse than 'Heartbleed' Summary
This article brings attention to a new computer bug affecting operating systems such as Linux and Mac OS X. 'Bash' or also known as 'Shellshock' is a new piece of software used to control command prompts on numerous Unix computers. Hackers are able to exploit Bash to take complete control of any wanted computer. People are rating this bug as a 10 for severity, allowing it to be manipulated very easily by any hacker. This article also mentions another bug known as 'Heartbleed' which came about in April. This bug allowed hackers to spy on computers but not gain complete control of them. 'Bash' is now more viral and devastating than 'Heartbleed'. Yes the lead of the article is effective because it warns everyone about a new computer virus so they can save people from a lot of computer problems in the future. Tod Beardsley had this to say in the article; "Using this vulnerability, attackers can potentially take over the operating system, access confidential information, make changes, et cetera, anybody with systems using Bash needs to deploy the patch immediately." This gives the consumers of these exploited computers information on just how dangerous the new virus is. The ending of this article is more informative than exciting, but this is a good thing because it provides people with the information need to treat 'Bash'.

Arsenal out of League Cup, Liverpool advance Summary
This article is a recap of the games of the EPL League Cup that happened on September 23, 2014. Throughout the article it discusses the results of each game played on Tuesday, for example; Liverpool beat Middlesbrough 14-13 in a marathon penalty shootout. The League Cup has just finished the third round of the tournament. Most soccer games usually end with a score of something like 2-0 or 3-1, needless to say there not the highest scoring games regularly. So far a game to be tied 2-2, then go into a shootout that ended 14-13 is incredible, that's why this lead is so effective. For any fan of the EPL or even Liverpool's soccer team in general, a hook like that would catch your interest ten times out of ten. A great quote in this article is said by Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool's team manager, that says; "We gave away poor goals, to be honest. At the moment, we are making too many mistakes but I can't fault the character and the mentality of the players. Congratulations to Middlesbrough, I thought they were excellent. but it's great for us to get through." This quote caught my attention because it's always great to see a team manager address another team with respect, which shows great sportsmanship. This article is about the identity of the masked man in ISIS beheading videos being identified. Lately very gruesome videos have been published by ISIS that show the beheading of two American journalists and a British aid worker. The videos didn't show the actual beheading but its not hard to piece together the facts. The lead in this article is very gripping because its very valuable information that almost anyone who have been keeping an eye on what has been happening in our world lately concerning ISIS. There are no direct quotes in this article but there is a video which gives a little bit more information on the article in general. This article also mentions another bug known as 'Heartbleed' which came about in April. This bug allowed hackers to spy on computers but not gain complete control of them. 'Bash' is now more viral and devastating than 'Heartbleed'. Yes the lead of the article is effective because it warns everyone about a new computer virus so they can save people from a lot of computer problems in the future. Tod Beardsley had this to say in the article; "Using this vulnerability, attackers can potentially take over the operating system, access confidential information, make changes, et cetera, anybody with systems using Bash needs to deploy the patch immediately." Arsenal out of League Cup, Liverpool advance Summary
This article is a recap of the games of the EPL League Cup that happened on September 23, 2014. Throughout the article it discusses the results of each game played on Tuesday, for example; Liverpool beat Middlesbrough 14-13 in a marathon penalty shootout. The League Cup has just finished the third round of the tournament. Most soccer games usually end with a score of something like 2-0 or 3-1, needless to say there not the highest scoring games regularly. So far a game to be tied 2-2, then go into a shootout that ended 14-13 is incredible, that's why this lead is so effective. For any fan of the EPL or even Liverpool's soccer team in general, a hook like that would catch your interest ten times out of ten. A great quote in this article is said by Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool's team manager, that says; "We gave away poor goals, to be honest. At the moment, we are making too many mistakes but I can't fault the character and the mentality of the players. Congratulations to Middlesbrough, I thought they were excellent. but it's great for us to get through." This quote caught my attention because it's always great to see a team manager address another team with respect, which shows great sportsmanship. The article ends with the final game results from Tuesday informing all fans how their team is doing within the tournament.

ISIS beheading videos' masked man identified, FBI says Summary
This article is about the identity of the masked man in ISIS beheading videos being identified. Lately very gruesome videos have been published by ISIS that show the beheading of two American journalists and a British aid worker. The videos didn't show the actual beheading but its not hard to piece together the facts. The lead in this article is very gripping because its very valuable information that almost anyone who have been keeping an eye on what has been happening in our world lately concerning ISIS. There are no direct quotes in this article but there is a video which gives a little bit more information on the article in general. The article itself isn't very long, but the ending still gives readers information about the videos' released and how ISIS is affecting the world today.

Reflection Entry #1 - First Newspapers
The newspapers of today are very different from the newspapers from the past due to many reasons. First of all one of the biggest changes is the look of the newspaper. The look of the newspapers back then were very bland, with little to no color or pictures. Today our newspapers are made to catch the eyes of the readers on paper and online. Back then there still were some pictures but still they were only in black and white. With today's technology we can post and edit the size, color and the effects of a picture such as shadow, shading etc. Another big difference is how we read the news now. Back then it would have just been on paper, but now we have so many more ways to access news via paper, online, social media, and even on tablets and smartphones.
I don't believe that the government should have that kind of control on the news today. I believe that people deserve to have the right to know what is going on in the world they live in. Just because the somebody finds out some information on something secret that the government is trying to keep on the down low, doesn't mean we don't have the right to know what is going on. If the information is fake then the government should step out and address the media on the fake news. The government shouldn't be able to keep us all in the dark on important events that take place.
I believe that this comparison was made between the interactive journalism and the internet because of how much of an influence the internet is on the way we live today. Everyday millions of people use social media worldwide spreading news and information to people they might not even know. Back then this was basically the same thing as social media, the only thing that was different was that back then everyone would have to read it then write their own comments and pass it on to another and another. Today you can instantly read news on any topic at the same time as thousands of others and post your comments on articles, videos, and websites in a matter of seconds after publishing. I am not surprised that this comparison was made because it is a very easy way to show how social media and commenting have developed over the years.
Many of the newspapers are critical to businesses and the government today because of how they feel about the information given or the product the receive. Many people now write reviews of products they have recently purchased, and they have the right to be honest about their experiences with it. If I was doing a review, I wouldn't say I had a good experience with the business and/or product if I had a horrible experience. I was actually very surprised that the first Canadian newspaper was written in Halifax because it belongs to one of the smaller provinces of Canada, which is Nova Scotia. If I had to guess on an area that I thought would've been the first place to publish a newspaper, I would've guessed Ontario or Alberta because they are the more populated and larger provinces in Canada, with more events and news to cover on a daily bases.
