Hard News Vs Soft News

Hard News:

'Significant snowfall' may arrive on Sunday: Environment Canada
This article would be an example of hard news because storm warnings are very concerning to people everywhere.  This article states that up to 30cm of snow could hit New Brunswick this Sunday.  This is a very serious matter because many people aren't prepared for the snow to start falling just yet.  Many people take snow storms very seriously because they will have to prepare their snow-plows, snowblowers, business hours and etc.  Snow can really throw a wrench into a lot of different aspects so hopefully it can hold off for a few more weeks because we don't need that much snow during the first of November.

Antares rocket explosion: Orbital Sciences Corp. looks for cause of blast
This article is an example of hard news because due to this explosion many innocent people could have been harmed, luckily nobody was.  After the explosion of the Antares rocket, workers had to search all the scorched remains to find out if there were any traces of how it may of happened, or workers who couldn't escape in time.  This would cause a huge financial drop in the companies budget due to the cost of all the repairs needed.

Soft News:

Liverpool, Chelsea dig deep, advance in League Cup
This article would be an example of soft news because it is only covering a sporting event.  It recaps the matches during the League Cup which consisted of matches between Liverpool vs Swansea City and others like Derby vs Sheffield United.  This news is more entertaining than serious, which doesn't draw much attention to non-soccer fans.  Although this news is interesting for people who watch the EPL, but for those who don't it is just another article.

Black Panther, Captain Marvel revealed on massive Marvel slate
This article is a great example of soft news because it calls out to all Marvel fans because they have added another new movie to their long list of upcoming films, once again.  This news article explains the announcement of the new Black Panther and Captain Marvel movies which will be released in the coming years.  This news is not as serious as an explosion or a bank robbery, but it definitely will get Marvel and superhero fans pumped through the roof for the upcoming films.

Borderline News:

Bats nearly wiped out by white-nose syndrome in Eastern Canada
This article would be an example of borderline news because it doesn't have a huge prominence or human interest but it can be very serious to the way we live today.  Like any other animal that gets endangered, it causes worry for scientist and it should cause interest in everyone, but people won't start to care until it's to late because that's just the way the world works in this generation.  No matter how much people would advertise the seriousness in the matter with the bats population dropping due to the syndrome, people won;t care because it doesn't effect them.  Although this could be a very serious matter,  the fact of human interest and prominence is very low.  Pray for the bats.

What is Newsworthy?

Mars One plan has potentially deadly flaws, scientists say

Timing - 3/4
This article has just recently been published but the timing couldn't be any better.  With the news speculating around the Mars One plan, the people who volunteer for the trip may be risking their lives.

Significance - 2/4
All though this news article may be popular, it doesn't affect many people.  They are only looking for a hand few of people to go to Mars, so the volunteers and their families would be the only ones affected.

Proximity - 1/4
The story affects the entire world, not just Canada.  For the Mars One plan, the volunteers could be from anywhere in the world, as long as they realize what is at risk when they agree.

Prominence - 1/4
This article has a great deal of prominence itself, but the overall prominence isn't very high.  Although many people have volunteered, their hasn't been anyone famous that people would make a big deal about if they enlisted.

Human Interest - 2/4
This story doesn't have a strong human interest because it really only affects the people that are interested in volunteering.

Liverpool beats QPR 3-2 in EPL thriller

Timing - 3/4
This article had been published last Sunday, right after the game came to a close.  For people that weren't able to watch the broadcast of the game, this was a good way for them to grab all the news that took place during the matchup.

Significance - 2/4
The article doesn't cover world changing news, but it does cover the closest chance for the biggest Premiere League upset this season.  Liverpool had odds of 5/1 for winning the game with ease, but due to the way they played, QPR (Queens Park Rangers) were able to give the Reds a run for their money by scoring 2 goals.  QPR's biggest downfall was the fact that their defense had conceded 2 own goals give the Reds a 3-2 win.

Proximity - 3/4
The proximity of this article is actually pretty wide.  Even though the English Premiere League takes place in England, there are still fans across the world for various teams.  So even though it took place a ways away, it still affects fans worldwide.

Prominence - 4/4
Liverpool are one of the most well known teams in the Premier League alongside Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United.  This was a very close game, with the last goal conceded on the last minute of the game.  Scoring for Liverpool were Phillip Coutinhio, following 2 own goals.  Team captain Steven Gerrard realizes that without their better goal scorer, Daniel Sturridge, is out due to injury, causing the team to work around a new formation to get back on track.

Human Interest - 3/4
This article, believe it or not sparks a lot of human interest because of the really close game.  The fact that QPR were able to give Liverpool this hard of a time was hard for even QPR fans to react to.

Westjet plane makes emergency landing in Thunder Bay

Timing - 4/4
The timing of this article was right on point because it was published right after the emergency landing was confirmed.  Timing is everything in journalism because giving people confirmed crucial information before any other business gives your business a better name.

Significance - 3/4
This article is very significant because people of Thunder Bay would be very eager to hear the full story of what was happening in the area.  It also is significant because it draws a lot of attention towards Westjet and their loyalty to keep their passengers safe.

Proximity - 2/4
This event actually hits close to home because even though it does take place in Canada, Thunder Bay isn't that far from New Brunswick.  Not much huge news takes place in Canada, so when something like this takes place, it doesn't matter where you're located in Canada, you'll be interested.

Prominence - 2/4
The prominence of this article isn't very strong overall.  There wasn't anyone severely famous that was mentioned about in the article.  The most attention goes towards Westjet because they are supposed to promise their passengers a safe flight, and if any mistakes happen they must be on the ball to protect that word or their business will fail.

Human Interest - 2/4
This article should spark attention to mostly travellers that fly with Westjet.  If you travel with a company, you put all your trust in their business and skill.  So when something this huge happens with your company people have to hear positive news because Westjet could lose a lot of business.

Timing - 3/4
This is fresh news reported directly after Hurricane Gonzalo struck in London, England.  This news was there for anyone interested in visiting London, or for anyone with family in London that may know the women who had passed.

Significance - 2/4
The significance of the storm is fairly higher in London than here.  The storm would cause a major impact to daily routine, traveller flights and in this case can even take lives.

Proximity - 1/4
The proximity for this event is very low because it took place almost across the world from us.  The affected it had on London is much greater than us, because for us it's just like reading another news article.  Since were not familiar with the area it's harder for us to really grasp the severity of the storm.

Prominence - 1/4
As far as the article reads, they only mention this certain women to be killed by the storm.  As she wasn't famous, people worldwide weren't affected as much.  Although all respect and sympathy goes to the family affected by this tragic storm.

Human Interest - 2/4
This would mostly just spark the attention to those of London and surrounding area, to be updated on this horrible storm.  Although people around the world seem to take interest in huge storms or natural disasters which may catch other viewers eyes.

Ebola Strikes Again!

On Friday, October 3, thousands of people fled Cordale, Vertshade around noon due to an outbreak in Ebola.  Traffic came to a complete stop in Cordale today as thousands of terrified people rushed onto the streets trying to evacuate the soon to be quarantined city.

The madness began around 9 am on October 3, when Cordale Police found a family of 4, deceased in their home, due to respect their names will not be announced.  We spoke to the first hand witness Mr. Robinson, the next door neighbor, of the affected family.  Mr. Robinson had this to say; "Well after breakfast on Friday's I'd always carpool with my neighbor, so when I arrived to see them all deceased, it scarred me for life.  My first reaction was to call the police."

A squad of Cordale Police and a ambulance arrived at the scene as fast as they could.  Estimated time of their arrival was about 7 minutes after receiving the call.  The two policeman on the scene where Officer Royce and Officer Henderson.  Officer Henderson was hard at work trying to piece together the crime, so we were able to speak with Officer Royce, this is what he had to say; "We arrived at the scene around 9:15 am, and began the search of the perimeter.  We found the family members within the house in their own beds.  The autopsies came back and what it appears is that the family have been tied into a small outbreak of Ebola starting right here in Cordale."

Within a few hours the news had spread like wildfire throughout Cordale, and that was when people started to hit the streets in terror.  Due to all the recent news concerning Ebola, this reaction was no surprise to the Police officials.  Around 8 pm that night, people had finally settled down, or fled the area.  The outbreak wasn't huge but give some time, and you never know what kind of damage a disease could do.
